Android growth stopped in the US, while Apple’s iPhone steals all the new sales

Android Apple 400x250 Android growth stopped in the US, while Apples iPhone steals all the new sales

Smartphone sales at AT&T and Verizon Wireless over the past two years show that Android isn’t growing in the U.S. and that all new growth on the market is coming from Apple’s iPhone.

A recent US graph representing the US smart phone sales confirms the rumors that Apple is taking over the market. From March 2011 until March 2013,  the smart phone sales at AT&T in US position iPhone as a leader, compared to its main competitor: Android. The report has been developed by Benedict Evans and it presented the ascending curve for the  iPhone carriers in America

Android is a commodity for the Americans

As in all markets, there is a seasonality when it comes to sales. By seasonality we mean either Feasts or different launchings. This is the iPhone sales case also, as the most important sales at both AT&T and Verizon carriers happened right after the launching of the iPhone 4S (which happened in 2011) and the iPhone (2012).

Still, Android devices are an exception from the seasonality in sales. The buying decision is made by the clients as simple as it is: they need a phone, they go to the shop and buy the one that looks good or they get a recommendation for.  The launching of the “hero” Android devices was not a pretext for the customers to help the company increase their sales, all they did was split the share between more Android devices. So, iPhone had nothing to lose in this. What Evans also observed is that there is no correlation between the sales of the two great players on the tech market.  Apple launching a new device is not a temptation for the Android buyers, still…

Android buyers started to upgrade to iPhone

As many of the Android buyers are upgrading from basic phones, a buyer intention survey would have been indicated, and its results show that  “first time Android users” plan to upgrade to iPhones in the future.

Before this report, Evans calculated the rate of the Americans who bought Android devices in the last 2 years – and the answer is that more than 90% of the current Android users bought the device in 2011-2013. When it comes to the iPhone, same period,  the percentage is smaller – 68% out of the total iPhone users. What Evans added and raised us a question is that he would be interested in finding out which is their second purchase.

Verizon’s upgrade to iPhone in 2010

The history of Verizon is quite simple: at the end of 2009 it sustained the Android, as the company moved from Blackberry to Android. Ar that moment RIM was unable to deliver the devices comparable to iPhone. For instance, see the BlackBerry Storm which is one of the bad launches for the carrier. At the end of 2010, things for Verizon were clear: it’s not the Android which will help the company increase its sales, but the iPhone. In 2011, the company started selling a new CDMA iPhone
