Apple Has Patented an Android-Inspired Gestures Unlock System

Apple has submitted two patent applications recently announced by the Patent and Trademark Office. These describe iPhone and iPad gestures based unlock technique. The system is more advanced than the current methods used in Android and provides additional security.

Apple’s patent describes a pattern unlock system, in which the user can modify the interface elements, both in terms of size and position. Resize allows you to simplify production of the right gesture or complicate getting it, and regrouping position prevents break attacks, making the patterns less predictable. The system can also selectively use invisible dots: those that are not on the screen, but which can work in conjunction with the visible dots.

Other parameters may additionally complicate gestures. The system can take the input speed, pause and other timing elements into account when entering the code. Entering the same gestures in various ways thus may generate different results, wherein there is only one correct result. The patented system can also support multi-finger input and evaluate the complexity of the code.

Apple is unlikely to introduce the system to their own devices in the near future – it is too close to the one of Android. Yet the patents show the additional techniques the company considers for screen locking other than the digital code.
