Apple has reminded developers that all iPhone and iPad applications submitted to the App Store are to be optimized for iOS 8 and 64-bit architecture from February 1, 2015. This is stated in the news section of the developer.apple.com portal.

Apple first announced the obligatory transition to 64-bit in October last year. There was another mailout in December, according to which updates of all applications must be optimized for iOS 8 and 64-bit architecture from June 1.

Programmers who are planning to submit their developments to the App Store will have to optimize the software to run on the operating system iOS 8. It concerns both new applications and updates of the existing programs. The software should be developed by means of the latest version of Xcode 6 and the iOS 8 SDK.

Due to Apple, the 64-bit platform became mainstream after the iPhone 5s release. The steps taken by the Cupertino company spread panic among the manufacturers of ARM processors, as they were not ready for the competitor?s active actions in promoting 64-bit chips.

The situation changed only a year after that. Currently, all the major companies have organized mass production of the new processors or planned to do it in the near future. The operating system Android 5.0 Lollipop also started supporting 64-bit computing.

32-bit architecture will still be supported on iPhone and iPad in the nearest time. However, it is quite likely that Apple will completely abandon 32-bit in a more distant future, considering how actively it carries out the transition of its hardware to the new architecture.
