Apple has started selling iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones which are free of contract with any phone carrier in the US Apple Online Store. This is stated in a press release of the American corporation.

AT&T was the only operator in the United States selling the phone and exclusively providing service for it since the release of the first iPhone models in 2007. When the exclusive Apple contract with AT&T expired in February 2011, a CDMA-version of iPhone 4 for Verizon also hit the US market. The third phone carrier, Sprint, joined Verizon later.

The Apple smartphones of the last generation sold in the US were only locked to a phone carrier until now. The devices meant for the use based on a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint, were priced at $199, $299 and $399 or $299, $399 and $499 for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus respectively.

From now on, Americans can purchase the unlocked Apple phones in the Apple Online Store. The price of the contract-free iPhone 6 will be $649 for a model with 16 GB of memory, $749 for a 64 GB model and $849 for a 128 GB model. iPhone 6 Plus will be sold at a price of $749 for a model with 16 GB of memory, $849 for a 64 GB model and $949 for a 128 GB model.

All the models are available in black, white and gold cases. As stated on the website, the shipping of the contract-free iPhone 6 to US customers takes about 3-5 business days, while the locked phones are shipped next day.

Apple started selling unlocked smartphones in other countries long time ago, but the US market will see one of the lowest prices of these devices.
