The reality is that every new iPhone model is thinner than the previous one. For this reason, a new generation of Apple smartphones can void of the traditional 3.5mm audio jack.

Last week there was some information about the upcoming Vivo phone, the thickness of which was 3.85 mm. This unit is half as thick as the the last year’s flagship iPhone 5s. We don’t know the date of the device release yet, but we already know that it will not have a 3.5mm headphone port.

The thinnest smartphone today is Oppo R5. Unveiled last week, the unit has a thickness of 4.85 mm. Because of the drive to reduce the gadgets’ thickness designers also abandoned the standard audio jack. It is obvious that the same fate may befall the iPhone 7.

The original iPhone, released in 2007, had a thickness of 11.6 mm. iPhone 3G and 3G were slightly thicker (12.3 mm), but the next generation of the iPhone 4 / 4s was much thinner – 9.3 mm. Released in 2012, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s have become even thinner, their specifications indicate a thickness of 7.6 mm. The latest flagships by Apple, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, demonstrate the handsets thickness 6.9 and 7.1 mm, respectively. From a certain point Apple, which is desperately seeking to reduce the iPhone’s thickness, will not be able to use the 3.5mm audio jack.

Then how do we listen to music? Obviously, the release of the jackless iPhone will drastically increase the sales of Bluetooth-headsets. At the same time, Apple is all set to give up on the 3.5-mm connector. The fact that the updated specification of the proprietary digital interface provides the ability to use headsets with Lightning-connector.

In Apple they believe Lightning has many advantages over the usual audio jack. This connection has high bandwidth and provides higher quality of the sound. In addition, the specification allows you to connect external audio devices that require power supply via the Lightning-port, for example in the models with a digital signal processor, or supporting active noise reduction. Lightning connector also allows the headphones to receive firmware updates.

Headphone manufacturers are already reserching the models without the analog interface. In September, Philips introduced the world’s first headphones with Lightning-connection. Philips Fidelio M2L will go on sale in December.
