A number new features in iOS 8 including widgets and a third-party keyboard came up in Android four or five years ago, claims Sundar Pichai, the head of Android and Chrome OS development in Google.

“Apple announced a lot of great products during their presentation at the WWDC. They also announced the things that we implemented in Android four or five years ago, like support of third-party keyboards, enhanced notifications, and widgets, – said Pichai. – I think that any reasonable person will note that Android brings innovations to users much faster.”

In such a way the top-manager of Google reacted to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook criticizing the pace of Android system development at the opening of the WWDC. Recap: Cook said that the majority of Android users are working with “ancient” versions of the platform. According to Google, less than 14% of devices run Android 4.4 KitKat, the latest version of the platform, that launched last year.

“You have to understand that we do things different from Apple. They release two models of iPhone, and people buy them. We supply the market with thousands of devices worldwide,” – said Pichai. He paid what is due to Apple pointing out that he closely keeps an eye on the company which creates a successful vertical lineup of products.

Recap: among the main innovations of iOS 8 Apple highlights the support of predictive text input for the QuickType keyboard, the “Family Access” feature for sharing purchases, photos, and calendars within the family effortlessly, the “iCloud Photo Library” service and enhanced iMessage enabling to record and send voice files, videos and photos easily with a swipe gesture.
