Experts Compared iOS 8 and iOS 7.1.2 Battery Life

After upgrading the operating system to iOS 8, some iPhone and iPad users have spotted the battery drain on their devices. ArsTechnica experts studied the issue and confirmed that a number of models does not need recharging longer when running iOS 7.1.2 rather than iOS 8.
The iOS 8 upgrade was released just a few days ago. However, on Apple Support Communities there are already several dozen topics concerning abnormally short battery life of mobile devices based on the new firmware. Here’s what Twitter users say:
- With the new #iOS8, 100% of battery life is gone in an hour!
- Haven’t checked the phone for an hour, all the background apps disabled, and that resulted in 15% of battery life left.
- #iOS8 causes outrageous #iphone4s battery drain!
Although most people are OK with the battery life of their devices running iOS 8, a lot of users noticed a general reduction of the battery autonomy. One of the solutions is downloading the upgrade directly via iTunes.
ArsTechnica tests showed that most of the iOS 8 based models do discharge faster than those running iOS 7.1.2. For example, the time of web surfing when using iPhone 5s decreased from 482 to 466 minutes, and iPhone 5 battery life shortened from 494 to 489 minutes. At the same time, some older devices even got the battery autonomy expanded. For instance, the first generation of iPad mini enables almost 40 minutes longer wi-fi browsing, with 474 minutes running iOS 7.1.2 vs. 512 minutes running iOS 8.
The battery drain is not the only thing to complain about within the iOS 8 upgrade. The users also noted that both third-party and embedded apps, including the Settings App, commonly crush to the home screen. In addition, iOS 8 runs slower than iOS 7.1.2 on some devices.
