Your Apple iOS device is iCloud enabled, feature that can be used for backup as well as for extra help in tracking your lost or stolen device. If by any chance someone steals your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, having the Find my iPhone (or Find my iPod/Find my iPad) feature enabled is your best chance of getting it back. It can even lock data remotely, erase said data to keep it from falling into the wrong hands or keeping it secure. So do not waste any more time and enable this feature on your device. Maybe one day you will actually need it!

How To Enable and Use the Find My iPhone feature.

To enable this feature launch Settings and choose iCloud. From there change Find my iPhone to on. In case your device gets lost or stolen, all you need to do is go to www.icloud.com and log into your own account. From there click Find my iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.

If you have more than one device, choose the one you’re trying to locate from the list presented to you. Tap the Information icon from the map that appears. From here you can play a sound or send a message, lock the device remotely or wipe it clean through the Internet. WiFi devices will only be trackable when they come in rage with a WiFi network. The others will be available as long as they have reception and will be symbolized by a green dot next to them.

If you forgot your iOS device in someone else’s house, you can let them know by sending a message asking for retrieval or by playing a sound. Click on Play Sound or Send Message and start typing your message. Slide the button next to Play Sound to On or Off to enable or disable sound being played at full volume. After you send this, an alert will be displayed on your device and will remain there until the screen is unlocked.  Also, if you think your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch might have been stolen or irretrievably lost, the first thing you want to do is wipe it clean of data and lock it.

You can also track you lost or stolen device via a secondary one. There’s a free iPhone app in the App Store just for this, an you can install it on a friend’s device or on your secondary device. It will offer the same features as described above.
