How to jailbreak iPhone 4S running iOS 6.0.1 Tethered on Mac OS X
One of the news in the Apple’s word is that the iOS 6.0.1. firmware was released. It has some improvements and it fixes bugs which previous versions couldn’t fix.
If you updated your A4 iOS device to this version, then it is good for you to know that jailbreak your device’s system; for those who are not aware of the therm jailbreak in this context, this is a simple definition: through the installation of a software application , you get to permit your iPhone’s file system any amendment you want (from customizing its looks to getting different ringtones). Still, you have to know that a jailbroken device running IOS (even if it is a iPhone, iPod touch or iPad) can still use the previous functions properly (the user can browse App Store and iTunes as before)
But which are the tools that help you complete the jailbreak operation? RedSnow is the free tool that helps the user jailbreak iOS devices by connecting to a computer (using a regular USB charging cable). The only disadvantage is that there are some steps that should be followed precisely, in order to finish the jailbreak accordingly.
Before starting, we would like to explain what tethered means, just in case the therm is not so clear. After the jailbreak, if the device reboots, you should plug the device into a computer and use Redsnow to boot it again (see step 8 below)
Also, RedSnow (the jailbreak tool that works for both Mac and Windows) was updated recently, but it did not communicate that it contains support for the iOS 6.0.1. firmware. In this case, still, if you updated to iOS 6.0.1. you will be able to complete the jailbreak operation, as there is one extra step which should be completed – to point RedSnow to the applicable iOS 6 firmware.
The following tutorial is applicable for Mac, but there is an available step-by-step guide for Windows, if you just follow the provided link.
First, please take into consideration the following supported devices: iPhone 4 CDMA,iPhone 4 GSM,iPhone 3GS,iPod Touch 4G
Next, please follow each of the steps below, in order for the operation to be a succesful one. Take into consideration the versions of the tools:
Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 With RedSn0w 0.9.15b3
Step 1. Download RedSnow 0.9.15b3 for the Mac OS X operating system.
Also, in the downloads section you will find the iOS firmware which should be downloaded for the device which is being jailbreaked.
Step 2. After the download of RedSnow 0.9.15b3 and the iOS firmware is completed, next step is to launch it. You will do this by double clicking on the Redsnow app.
Tip: If you need to launch RedSnow on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, you have to press the control button, hold it down, click the RedSnow and then click the Open action (it is the top of the possible actions, when you click right)
Step 3. - RedSnow should now be running, so you just have to click the Extras option (the second option)
Step 4. - After you’ve selected Extras, 7 other options will appear; you have to find Select IPSW and click on it. Then select the compatible iOS 6 firmware file for your device. At this point, RedSnow should recognize the firmware you will need; now go back to the previous menu and select Jailbreak
Step 5. – After clicking the Jailbreak button, the instructions for entering DFU mode (for those of you who don’t know, DFU stands for Device Firmware update). They will be different according to the device you own. After you read the instructions, you should power off the iPhone or iPod Touch and just select the Next option.
The instructions on the screen will help you go through this next step. After you click the Next button you have to follow the procedures:
- hold down the Power button for 5 seconds (you find the power button in the corner)
- after the 5 seconds, do not release the Power button, but hold down the Home button (it is found in the bottom center) at the same time with the Power button for 10 seconds.
- next, do not release the home button, but stop holding down the power button for maximum 15 seconds.
If you have followed the steps accordingly, you should get to step 6 now.
Step 6. - The device should have entered the DFU mode and this is the moment when the iOS 6 firmware starts to be processed by RedSnow. You will see on the screen the message: “Preparing jailbreak data; patching kernel”
After the firmware’s processing has been completed, you will get to a screen which contains some options for the Jailbreak. It is important to have the “Install Cydia” option checked. Only after you click the Next button, the real Jailbreaking process starts
Step 7. - After RedSnow begins the operation of jailbreaking your iPhone/ iPad, be sure you do not cancel the process or use the computer for any other purposes at the same time. After the jailbreak operation of the iOS device is completed, the device will automatically reboot. Take into consideration that the reboot might happen in a non jailbroken state, because of the tethered jailbreak and you will need to boot it using RedSnow.
Step 8. - In case you exited the application, launch it again, click the Extras button in the menu, then select the IPSW button. Don’t forget to browse again the iOS 6 firmware compatible with your device. Then click the Just Boot button. At this step, the device (even if we talk about an iPhone or iPod Touch) should be put into the DFU mode again. When it is in the DFU mode, the iOS device will boot into a jailbroken step.
It is important for you to know, that step 8 will be repeated each time the smart phone or the iPod device loses power.
If you have followed all the 8 steps above, your device (even if it is iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPad Touch 4G) should have the jailbreak operation on the iOS 6.0.1.firmware completed. Now, it’s time to fire up Cydia and start installing the themes which were unavailable for you until now.
