How to jailbreak iPod Touch 4G running iOS 5.1.1 with Redsn0w on Mac OS X

The day when iOS 5.1.1 was launched, was for sure a very important day for Apple, especially because of the fact that the new version jumped on the market with overall improvements and bug fixes, and more than that all these improvements had some new functions working with your iPod Touch 4G. As you recall, we were the ones who advised you to stay away and  not to update your iPod Touch with the new iOS 5.1.1 firmware, but now we are happy to share with you some good news if you still did updated your gadget. How come? you may ask yourself. The new RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b is the answer, because you can now Jailbreak your iPod Touch 4G tethered firmware on Mac OS X systems.  So if you follow the steps below, at the end you should have your iPod Touch 4G Jailbroken, running on the tethered iOS 5.1.1 firmware , by simply installing RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b for Mac OS X.

As we already said, below you can find the steps you need to go through in order to have your iPod Touch 4 G Jailbroken. This should not be that hard, so just pay attention.

Step 1) – The first step, as you probably already guessed is to make sure you downloaded the last RedSn0w for Mac OS X version on the market. At the very  moment we speak, this last version would be RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b. We come to make this first step more easy for you, so all you have to do to download it is to check out our  Downloads Section or to click directly on the link below and the download should start.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b (Mac OS X)

Step 2) – Going to the next step, considering you now have the RedSn0w downloaded into your computer. Go to the redsn0w application and launch it by double clicking on it. The install process should begin.

Step 3) – Now that the RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b is running on your Mac, you will next see a screen with two options from which you can choose. Just click on the Jailbreak button, and this is all you have to do for now. You will need Extras button later on, but until then just go on the next step.

Step 4) – On step four, a new screen will appear after you clicked the Jailbreak button. Here you will find out how to put your iPod Touch 4G into DFU mode, because this is what you have to do next in order to succeed the jailbreaking of your device.  Firstly you will have to PLUG IN your iPod Touch to the computer, and after that switch it off  from the Slide to Power Off button.

Follow the instructions and make sure you accomplish these two requirements, your iPod is OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer, you can now click on the Next button for the DFU mode process to start.

Step 5) –  After clicking the next button, you will have to proceed with other new instructions. This time, it will be some real-time instructions that will help you to make your iPod Touch 4 G enter the DFU mode. Just follow the 3 steps below and  you will succeed doing what you need to for the DFU process to begin.

  • First you will need to hold down the Power button of your device for about 3 to 5 seconds.
  • Keep holding the Power button, and go on on holding down the Home button as well. Keep both of them like that for 10 seconds.
  •  Now stop holding down the Power button, but in opposition don`t release the Home button. Just keep it like that( the Home button) for about 15 seconds.

Step 6) – If you followed the steps presented before, your iPod Touch 4G should be now in DFU mode and your device should be prepared by RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b for the jailbreaking that follows.

Step 7) – As soon as RedSn0w is done running it’s routine on your iPod Touch 4G and has paved the way for the Jailbreaks  to begin, you’ll have to choose the options you’ll need on your device after the Jailbreak process will be finished. As you may already know the only option you’ll need after this process is finished, is the Install Cydia option, which will give you the means to further download your favourite apps. Of course, if you consider you may need other options than this one make sure they are marked, along with Cydia, and then click on the next button.

Step 8 ) – Once you have marked the options you will need to be installed after the Jailbreak process is finished, you may click on the next button and RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b will start jailbreaking your device. Keep in mind, that under no circumstances, you would NOT INTERRUPT the process by using your computer during this period.  Once your iPod Touch has been jailbroken it will boot itself with the Apple logo, but it will not go any further than this.  This is normal, considering that your iPod Touch is now having a tethered Jailbreak. The next thing you’ll have to do is to put your device through  DFU mode again and re-run RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b in order to boot it back into a jailbroken and functional state, in which you can use your device at full potential.

Step 9) – To make sure it will work properly, once your iPod Touch4 G tethered, as we already let you know before, you will have to plug in your device into your Mac OS X computer every time you will need to recover the power. So, just start once again RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b to make sure that your iPod Touch is rebooted into a working Jailbreak state. Now you will see again the screen with those two buttons Jailbreak button and Extras button. If you ignored the second one in the first place, in this moment the Extras button is the one that you need. So click on it, and choose from the drop down list the Just Boot button. You must return now to the DFU mode step, so go on, make your iPod Touch 4G enter again the DFU mode.
