How to jailbreak iPod Touch 4G running iOS 5.1.1 with Redsn0w on Windows

Actually, we should start by clarifying the jailbreaking issues. So, you should know that iOS jailbreaking removes the limitation on Apple devices and it permits the installing of more apps and functions in order to enjoy the technological world even more. What is important is that if you jailbreak your Apple device (even if we talk about iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad) they will still be able to use the tools they used to, such as App Store & iTunes.

You own an Ipod Touch 4G or an iPod Touch 3G and you want to enjoy the apps available more than now?

In the following lines you will learn how to jailbreak the device on the iOS 5.1.1 firmware tethered using RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b version on Windows.

For those of you who ask themselves which is the difference between a thethered and an untethered jailbreak, here is the answer:

If you proceed for a tethered jailbreak, then you will need to have the iOS device plugged into a computer when turned on and you will have to follow step 9 in the following “how to” guide repeatedly.

If you decide to have an untethered jailbreak of your device, then you don’t need a computer, as everything you need for entering the jailbroken state is on the iPhone.

How to Jailbreak iPod Touch on  iOS 5.1.1 with RedSn0w in Windows

Step 1/ –   The first action required is to download the latest version of Redsn0w (which is RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b; please take into consideration that you should re-check the latest version, as technology is constantly moving forward). You have 2 options in order to download the tool: Go to our Downloads Section or Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b (Windows) directly.

Step 2/  - After the download of RedSn0w is completed, you will have to extract it in the computer, as it follows:

Right click on the zip archive and click the “extract to redsn0w_win_0.9.10b8b” folder

After it is 100% extracted, you need to browse the folder and find the redsn0w.exe file, right-click on it and choose the Run as administrator option (it must be the second option, after Open)

Step 3/ - While RedSn0w is running and on the screen you see 2 options – Jailbreak or Extras, choose the Jailbreak button, in order to install Cydia (the software application that will help you install software packages after the jailbreak

Step 4/ - After you select the Jailbreak button, a screen welcoming you to the latest version of redsn0w appears. In order to move to the next step, your iPod Touch should be in DFU mode (Device Firmware Upgrade) which allows the devices to be restored.

In order to complete the action, you should follow the instructions on the screen which will guide you through the operation. You should plug-in and power off your device (which, in this case is the iPod Touch) and, after this, click the next button in order to proceed to the DFU mode process of your device

Step 5/ - After you have clicked the next button, the instructions will appear on the screen. You will need to follow them in real-time in order to put your device into DFU mode.

So, please be sure you don’t skip any of the following:

-          Hold down the Power button for 5 seconds (you must know that it is in the corner of the device)

-          Do not release the Power button but hold down the Home button at the same time with the Power one for 10 seconds (you must know that the home button is in the bottom center)

-          Do not release the home button, but take your fingers off the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

Then just click next and your device should be in the DFU mode

Step 6/ - After your device is in DFU mode, on the screen it will appear “Preparing jailbreak data”. This is the point when your iPod Touch is being prepared for the actual jailbreak.

Step 7/  - After the process of preparing your iPod Touch for the jailbreak has finished, all  you have to do is check the option you need to go along with your jailbreak. The must option is installing Cydia, the others are optional ones (see custom bundle). After you have selected whatever you want (with Cydia compulsory), click the Next button

Step 8/ - Now, you are almost at the end of the process. It was not that hard, was it? Let’s see: you selected the Jailbreak options you need in order for the operation to be a successful one, and now all you have to do is click the next button. This is the moment when RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b will begin the actual jailbreak of your iPod Touch device.

It is very important to be sure you do not use the computer during the same time or you don’t interrupt the process.

As we specified at the beginning of the “how-to” guide, this is a tethered jailbreak, so after the jailbreak of the Ipod, the device will boot up with the Apple logo and stop doing anything. Do not worry, just put your iPod Touch back in the DFU mode and, with RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b’s help, boot the device into the final functional jailbreak

Step 9 and the last one/ - Please be sure to remember that a tethered jailbreak requires to plug your iPod Touch in the computer every time the device loses power; otherwise it will not have all the functions of a jailbroken device.

In order to do this operation successfully, you first have to launch RedSn0w, click the extra option and, when the Extras window is open, click on the first option: Just boot; this will require to put your iPod Touch into DFU mode again.

So, if you followed all the above steps, you should now have your iPod Touch 4G or iPod Touch 3G jailbroken on the iOs 5.1.1 firmware. Congratulations! You are a good recruit in the do it yourself actions.
