How to jailbreak iPod Touch 4G running iOS 6.0.1 Tethered on Mac OS X
Ever since the new iOS 6.0.1 firmware has been released, opinions have varied (at the beginning mostly however) regarding if it would be best to update to it or not. The new firmware comes with a variety of bug fixes that can bring a smile on iOS 6 users’ faces and that will really make a difference! Among the numerous bug fixes that have been introduced we can mention those for Exchange meetings and graphical issues with the keyboard, so as you can see the range is pretty large. If you have chosen to update to the new release of the iOS 6.0.1 firmware and you are the possessor of an A4 iOS device, then we can bring you the good news – a tethered jailbreak can be performed indeed. But this current update does not make an explicit clear statement on the adding of support for this new firmware, although the update was done at the RedSnow’s level. This is what we are here to do. Although we don’t have this exact confirmation, if can be done, there are some additional measures to be taken for this to happen, so you need to direct RedSnow to the applicable iOS 6 firmware and then simply proceed with the jailbreak process itself. You will have no issues from this point on, but just stick with us through the process.
Before we start, I will briefly mention the types of supported devices, and these are: iPhone 4 CDMA, iPhone 4 GSM, iPhone 3GS (but pay attention: if old-bootrom, untethered Jailbreak) and also iPod Touch 4G.
How to Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 With RedSn0w 0.9.15b3
The first step in proceeding with the jailbreaking of iOS 6.0.1 with RedSnow 0.9.15b3 for the Mac OS X operating system is exactly what this action states. Download the RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 for the Mac OS Xoperating system. Once you have completed this download, you need to perform another one: download the the iOS 6 firmware for the device that you are Jailbreaking, and then you are ready to go.
The 2nd step starts as soon as the first one has been completed, so you have both downloads of the RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 and of your iOS 6 firmware file. Once these two accomplished, you have to launch the iOS 6 firmware and you can only do this by double clicking on the Redsnow app. If you are using OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, then the steps are a little different for launching the app. In order to launch RedSn0w here you need to detect the control button, hold it down, and only afterwards click the Redsnow app. If you have followed these 2 steps, you only need to open it and you will do this by simply clicking the Open option.
We reached step 3. Once you are welcomed to the Redsnow app, then you have reached your destination. You will be presented with two options, the first being Jailbreaking and the second clicking the Extras section. This is what you need to click on – the “Extras” button.
For Step 4 - you will need to click on the Select IPSW button and from there on simply select your device’s particular iOS 6 firmware. The firmware will be immediately reorganized by RedSnow, so once this action completed, you have to go back so you will do this by intuitively pressing the Back option, and then immediately also click the Jailbreak button. Simple as that.
So you have clicked on the Jailbreak button. You are now at the 5th step. You will be displayed with a series of instructions to prepare you for entering DFU mode. You need to carefully read the instructions in order to be able to proceed, and once you have finished to go through them, your iPhone or iPod Touch (depending on what type of devices you are operating on) needs to be afterwards powered off. Do this if you haven’t done it already, and just click on the Next button afterwards to proceed with the other steps that follow.
Now that you have accessed ADFU mode, your processing of the iOS 6 firmware will be commenced by RedSn0w. And this is step 6. You will be able to see this progress on your screen. When the process has completed and the firmware has been detected and processed, then the process will show you (on your screen) a series of options you have to choose to proceed with your jailbreak. You need to make sure you click on Install Cydia and once this option has been selected, you will have to immediately click on the Next button, which will trigger the actual jailbreaking process to begin.
Now we are starting to roll and no interruption to this must be made once RedSnow actually starts to jailbreak your device (may it be iPhone or iPod touch, as mentioned before). This marks step 7. So again, I must reiterate that you need to not interrupt this process, or even use your computer while this process is ongoing. You will be able to notice when the process has ended, as the iOS device will afterwards reboot into a non-jailbroken state (it might happen sometimes that it will not be able to go further than the Apple logo). Why does this happens, you might ask yourself. Well, basically because what you have now is a tethered jailbreak so if you want to boot it, you have to use RedSnow.
As step 8, make sure you relaunch RedSnow if you have happened to get out of it in the very first place. Then you need to click on a few buttons to make it work: firstly, click on the Extras button, and then just click on the Select IPSW one. Once you have done this, search for the firmware of your iOS’s device once more and simply click on the Just Boot button. The process is pretty intuitive, as you can see. And then you need to put the DFU mode back on on your iOS device. Once this on, your device shall boot into a jailbroken state. Brilliant. However, just remember that this step must be repeated if your iOS device loses power (every time this happens, actually).
Congratulations
Congrats, folks! We have together managed to successfully jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 4G on the iOS 6.0.1 firmware tethered. Mission accomplished, so what more can we wish for? Well, we need from this stage on to get Cydia going and start installing our most favorite tweaks. We can do it now. Please let us know if the steps have worked for you too and share with us which of your favorite tweaks have made it to your device. Looking forward for your feedback.
