How to jailbreak iPod Touch 4G running iOS 6.0.1 Tethered with Sn0wbreeze on Windows

Did it happen for you to browse a friend’s iPhone and discover he has more apps available than you? And, when trying to get them from Apple, you couldn’t? Well, so even if we talk about a game or a weather apps, those are apps which are only available on jailbroken devices. Then, why wait and not jailbreak your device right now?

Some of the reasons for which you should proceed to jailbreaking your iPhone might be that it helps you to hide your unused Apple apps,?get a better SMS app,?Get options at your fingertips (?by swiping ?your thumb across the top black bar) and many others.

So, if you decide to enjoy more apps and you feel like doing some basic “do it yourself” steps, then you should ?just read through the article. There are tools that make your life easier. One of them is SnowBreeze released by iH8Snow, with its new improved version, with support for both iOS 6.0. and iOS 6.0.1 firmwares. Please keep in mind though that the tool does not support new devices, such as iPhone 5.

Before you begin, you should know that there are 2 types of jailbreak, depending on the boot conditions. The main difference is that tethered jailbreaks require a computer, while untethered don’t,as everything required to enter the jailbroken state is available on the iPhone.

As we already said before, there are many tools for jailbreaking your device. On the one hand, tools like RedSnow keep intact everything you already have installed and configured on your device, on the other hand there are tools like SnowBreeze that require to restore the device. The thing is that SnowBreeze creates a custom IPSW (firmware file), which should be restored to your iOS device before the actual jailbreak.

In this case, we will talk about jailbreaking the iPod Touch or other iDevice with SnOwBreeze. You should be aware that you will lose any data that is stocked on your device, but, at the same time, you will have the possibility to personalize your device after jailbreaking it. Also, you will be able to unlock to the iOS 6.0/6.0.1. firmware without being necessary to update its baseband.

You will see that the steps are simple to be followed, but before starting, we recommend you not to update to the iOS 6.0.1 firmware, as you might experience problems during the process. So, you would better restore to the iOS 6.0 firmware and start jailbreaking your device (supported devices are iPhone?4 (CDMA/GSM), iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G)

Step-by-step guide in order to jailbreak iOS 6.0/6.0.1 with SnowBreeze

Step 1/ – In order to start the actual jailbreaking, you will need to have the tool installed on your computer. So, search for the latest version available (at the moment of the article it is Sn0wBreeze v2.9.7) and select the method of download more comfortable for you. You can either go to our Downloads Section or following the link provided in this article. For any of the methods, you just follow the link and click on the Download button, in order to save the zip file in your computer.

Step 2/ – After ?downloadingSn0wBreeze v2.9.7, you continue by extracting the files it contains. Be careful to choose a folder with a distinct name, so that you recognize it in the computer. In order to extract the files, you just need to right-click the zip and click on Extract files or Extract to folder.

Step 4/ -? At the first launching ofSn0wBreeze, you will see a pop-up window telling you that the software is not for commercial use and other legal terms. After you read it carefully, click the OK button and you will get to another window. It states the supported devices of the version you are currently using. Be sure your device is in the list and then continue to the next step, by clicking the blue arrow in the right corner.

Step 5/ Next, you will need to click the browse button and then select the type of firmware you are jailbreaking either iOS 6.0. or 6.0.1

When you select the installed firmware (iOS 6.0/6.0.1), Sn0wBreeze will start identifying the firmware file. At the end of the operation, you will receive a message on the screen which says that the IPSW was successfully verified. Do not proceed to the next step until you get this message. Then, you should click the blue arrow in order to continue.

Step 6/ You will get to a screen where you have to select the mode you want to continue in.

It refers to the type of the iOS 6.0/6.0.1?IPSW you will create. You will see that the 4 options available are:?iFaith?Mode,?Simple?Mode,Expert?Mode and?Baseband Preservation?Mode. We will explain each of them below, in order for you to choose the most suitable one:

  • iFaith Mode:?By using this mode you will create a custom IPSW using the SHSH blobs already saved on the device ( the SHSH blobs are actually data from the Apple?s digital signature protocol for iOS restores and updates)
  • ?Simple Mode: As its name says, it is the mode that creates the custom iOS 6.0/6.0.1?IPSW, without the opportunity of personalizing the options.
  • Expert Mode: This is the opposite of the Simple Mode, the mode where you select the customization options of your jailbreak, before creating the custom iOS 6.0/6.0.1 IPSW.
  • Baseband Preservation Mode:? You can use this mode if you don?t want to jailbreak your phone, but want to upgrade to ?6.0/6.0.1 firmware without doing any other changes to your device.

We will select the Expert mode, as it is the most complex of all and it permits personalization for the jailbreak. So, our recommendation is for you to click Expert Mode and continue through the following steps.

Note: Please keep in mind that your iPhone?s baseband will not be updated by Sn0wBreeze, no matter which method of jailbreaking/ updating the firmware you choose

Step 7/ – If you got to this step, then you can now say that the customization process begins. First, you should choose the General button in order to continue. For the moment ignore the other options, such as Build IPSW, which you will see on the screen. After checking the General button, click the arrow and continue.

Step 8/ – In the General box you have the choice of selecting many options in order to obtain a personalized jailbreak. They are divided by:

  • SpringBoard Modifications ? where you have the Enable Battery Percentage Option:? this will add a percentage number near the battery icon, which is in the status bar. It will help you anticipate the moment the battery dies and not overload it when it is under 20%.
  • Hacktivaton/ Other Modifications where you have 2 possibilities:

-????????? Activate the iPhone [hacktivate] ? option which will activate the iPhone, if this is unlocked

-????????? Install SSH ? option which will install an SSH service which will help you view the file system?s device.

  • Root Partition Size: option that can change the default size allocated to the jailbroken apps. Our recommendation is to leave it at its default size.

Now think of the options you will need in the future for your device and select those really helpful. Tick the options and then click the blue arrow to proceed to step 9

Step 9) ??At this point you will be able to pre-install tweaks. So, if you have some applications/ tweaks which you prefer to install, you should just select them and then click the blue arrow to continue.

Then, you will proceed to the next step:

Step 10/ – Don?t worry if you remember the window graphic that appears. You were sent back to the customization?home screen?again. This time, as you have all the options ticked, you should select the Build IPSW option and click the arrow in the right to continue.

Step 11/ This is when the custom IPSW is being created by Sn0wBreeze, following the options you have previously selected.

This is the process which takes longer than the others, from 5 to 30 minutes or even more, also depending on your computer?s capabilities, so you need to wait and don?t cancel the process. At the end, the created firmware file will be found on your computer?s desktop.

Note:? You can choose to play PacMan while waiting for your custom IPSW to be created, right in Sn0wBreeze?s window. You should try it, as it can be a fun way of losing track of time.

Step 12/ – After the process has been completed, a window which tells you that Sn0wBreeze has created your IPSW and the file is located on your desktop will appear. You will need to put your iDevice into DFU mode. Before you do this, you should know that DFU mode is actually Device Firmware Upgrade mode, which allows the devices to be restored from any state they are in.

In order to start this process, you should click the OK button in the middle of the window.

If you don?t know how to enter DFU mode, don?t worry. After you click the OK button, Sn0wBreeze will get you through its real-time DFU mode instructions.? First, you should have your device connected and then turned off.

After your device is in the DFU mode, you can restore your custom IPSW firmware file

Step 13/ – Continue to follow Sn0wBreeze?s real-time instructions as shown in the window and, at the end, iTunes should be launched by Sn0wBreeze with an extra info saying that the iReb application is successfully running. You can go back to iTunes and click Shift +Restore to the custom Sn0wBreeze. You might get an error ?2003? in iTunes, after Extracting. If this happens, you have to unplug and replug the device and repeat the action.

After you have successfully finished the action, select your custom IPSW firmware file from the desktop in order to restore to your device (even if it is iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad)

Step 14/ – At this step you will be introduced to the tool named iBooty. Don?t panic, you are almost at the end of the process; ?at this point the iOS 6/6.0.1 jailbreak was tethered and you will only need to boot your device, after it finished the restoring. This is where iBooty comes.

You probably ask yourself what is iBooty. Well, ?this tool is needed to boot the device into a tethered jailbreak state in order to be able to run apps and tweaks from Cydia.

Please take into account that anytime you will restart your iOS device, you will use this tool

Note: iBooty will be extracted on your computer and saved in a separate folder on your computer after the iOS6/ 6.0.1. firmware file is created. In order to launch the tool, you will need to browse the folder and double-click on the exe. file named iBooty.exe

You will be informed that the tool is not for commercial use and then you will be diverted to a screen where you should select your device. A note telling you that the tool requires iTunes 10 or above will also be visible on the screen.

Step 15/ Now you should select your iDevice from the given list, then click the Start button in the left side of the screen in order to proceed. You will need to follow the instructions in order to put your device into DFU mode in order for it to boot in a jailbroken state

Together with this last step, you can now say you have successfully jailbroken your iDevice.
