How To Save Your SHSH blobs for the new iOS 6.1

“Save your SHSH blobs”. You have probably seen this message on your iDevice if you have tried to jailbreak it. Actually, a SHSH blob is a piece of data from Apple’s digital signature protocol for iOS restores and updates. It allows the iOS versions to be installed on the device (no matter if it is about iPhone, iPad, iPod). With the Cydia server you have the SHSH blobs backed up, but you can also save them on the computer. What you should know is that you can not generate SHSH blobs, as they are patented by Apple.
Our recommendation is to have the SHSH blobs saved even if you are not planning a jailbreak. They might be a good help if you decide to downgrade from a newer firmware to iOS 6.1. It is important to know that in case the blobs are not saved for a specific firmware, you won’t be able to downgrade to the firmware anymore, unfortunately. So, in order to have this possibility, you must have the SHSH blobs for iOS 6.1 saved.
In the following lines, you will have a step-by-step manual in order to save your SHSH blobs now. It is a simple process and a very useful one. You will be happy you’ve done it when Apple releases the iOS 6.1.1 (or which other name will have the next firmware), as you will have your blobs saved and the possibility of downgrading. Another advantage of saving now is that Apple might not give the possibility of doing the operation after the new firmware is released.
Are you convinced? Let’s start! Don’t worry. Even if you haven’t done something like this before, it is a simple and rapid process. You just need the device, a computer and a tool for saving SHSH blobs on both Mac and Windows- TinyUmbrella.
Step 1/ You need to have the TinyUmbrella tool downloaded on your computer. You can download it from the special section, the only thing you should take into consideration is the operating system. The tutorial was done on a Mac, but you must follow the same steps when it comes to Windows and Linux.
Step 2/ Save the TinyUmbrella tool on the desktop of the computer and then run it, by double clicking the app icon. This might take a few minutes, so don’t panic. It will run, but it takes a while to initialize.
Step 3/ At this point you need the second device, the device you want to save your SHSH blobs for. Connect it to the computer. If you have more than one devices that can run iOS 6.1., you can do it for each of them, one by one. You should know that the supported devices are: iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Step 4/ In TinyUmbrella’s interface you will select the device you have connected. You can find this in the left-hand corner, upper side of the interface.
Step 5/ Go to the advanced tab and, from here, you should uncheck 2 available options. These are:
- Save ALL Available SHSH
- Request SHSH From Cydia
*This is an optional step, as you will see at the end of the article.
Step 6/ Change the default SHSH directory and select one which is easy to be browsed by you. It might be on the desktop or in any partition you’d like. It is important to be disposable, because you will have to use it in order to verify and backup your SHSH blobs.
Step 7/ Next, you should click the log tab, which helps you view the status of the save, while doing the operation.
Step 8/ At this point the blobs will be saved. In order to complete the operation you should do the following: click on Save SHSH (moment when TinyUmbrella will actually start doing it) and then save it to the directory you choosed in step 6. If you receive the message: SHSH succesfully saved, then everything worked as it should have.
Step 9/ This last step is for the check-up. Go to the directory you have created and verify that the SHSH blobs are there. In order to be more easy, name it with the device name and the firmware it uses – you might add another device at one time later and the possibility of mixing them up is high.
Take into consideration that you won’t keep the previously saved SHSH blobs that Apple is no longer using on the device. If you still want this, please ignore step 5. Leave the 2 options checked.
One more recommendation for you: backup the folder which contains the SHSH blobs to something easily to be found. For instance, Dropbox.
More to say, after Apple launches a newer version than iOS 6.1, you can follow the same steps to save the firmware.
That’s all! As we said before, it is a simple and rapid operation you should follow in order to have this essential backup of the SHSH blobs.
If you have any questions regarding any of the steps or if you have tried to do the operation, please share with us. Your feedback is important for us and for the other readers.
