Should you be driving your car or otherwise be engaged in something involving your hands not being free, the Voice Control in your iPhone becomes a very “handy” option. It’s a very important accessibility feature that you can use to command your device to do things for you via your voice. With the new iPhone, Siri replaced the need for this feature and now only the older devices are able to use it. In this article we’re taking a look at how this can be used and why it is useful.

If you want to start playing a song or dial someone, you can use Voice Control to do it for your. Issue a verbal command and just like Siri, Voice Control will dial or start playing the song your requested. However, Voice Control does not have the advanced features Siri does and neither can it search with it’s speed. On the iPhone 4, the function is listed as Voice Control and many of the tips you can apply to it can also be used in conjunction with Siri. Voice Over is also a function that just like Siri uses Voice Control, but it’s purpose is different.

Voice Control as a feature is limited to a few Apple models. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs have the feature, but in iPhone 4S it was lated replaced with Siri. As an OS you have to have at least iOS 3.1 on your phone for it to work, and at least iOS 4.0 for a full list of languages.

To use Voice Control you hold down the Home button and the Voice Over screen should pop up. Speak a clear voice command into the microphone and Voice Control will get to work as soon as you do that. It’s just like with Siri but with fewer options and customizations. If you have a strong accent it may be that the software will get confused Also, if the background noise is strong, some of you commands might be interpreted differently. Use the full name of the person you wish to call, since this might offer the software better precision. And also don’t make large pauses between the words in the command and don’t hesitate after the beep that lets you know you can now speak into the microphone. Be as clear as you can be. This is an application after all and it’s prone to error. Siri does a better job at understanding vocal commands. Do not be surprised if you might run into trouble with Voice Control.

There are options to set your language and you can pick yours in the Settings entry of the menu. Tap on General, go to International under the Keyboard entry and from there you should be able to search for your native language for Voice Control. There are also other options such as regional settings. There are also three different options for Chinese, with Simplified Chinese being one of them.
