Yesterday we reported that HTC sent invitations for an event that the Taiwanese company will host simultaneously in London and New York City, next month on March 25th. At this event HTC will unveil its next flagship smartphone, codenamed HTC M8, in exactly the same way that it unveiled the HTC One last year on 19 February 2013, at simultaneous press events in New York City and London. It is also rumored that at the same event in March, HTC may also unveil a mini variant of the HTC M8 flagship.

A new leaked image shows us how this year’s HTC One, also known as the HTC M8, will look like. The leaked image comes in the form of a press image via reputable Twitter account @evleaks. says: “The All New HTC One, 2014. pic.twitter.com/HmOEzq87A5” and the leaked press image confirms earlier rumors about it featuring dual rear camera sensors and dual LED flash. Other than that, this year’s HTC One seems to be very similar from a design point of view with last year’s flagship from HTC, as it shares the same design, gold color, stereo BoomSound speakers as seen in the leaked press image.

When it comes to its specs, we know that this year’s HTC One will use a better version of the HTC One Snapdragon System on Chip, the Snapdragon 800. It is also rumored to feature a larger display than last year HTC One, which was released with a 4.7 inch display featuring a Full High Definition resolution (1080p). Considering the display size will be increased but the resolution will remain the same (instead of being upped to Quad HD – 1440 x 2560 pixels), the pixels per inch density will drop which is not a good thing.

As you can see from the leaked press image, the new HTC One is confirmed to be released with dual rear camera sensors, which will help improve focusing, depth of field and overall image quality. One of the effects that twin rear camera sensors could make possible is the erase of unwanted objects or people from photos. This effect is already possible on some smartphones (such as the Samsung Galaxy S devices) but it is software based. Making it hardware based could not only speed the process but also improve the accuracy. Some of you know that the HTC One released last year comes with a 4 MP rear camera that includes a custom image sensor marketed as UltraPixel, which is composed of pixels that are 2.0 µm in size. While most of last year’s high end smartphones featured 8 MP rear cameras or even 13 MP rear cameras, HTC One’s rear camera offers the same image quality due to the Ultrapixel technology that offers very good image quality, especially in conditions of low light.

It is also possible that one of the two camera sensors on the back of the upcoming HTC M8 flagship is an Ultrapixel camera sensor that will be used especially for pictures taken in conditions of low light while the other camera sensor on the back of the device is a normal camera sensor. The real surprise was the presence of a dual colored LED flash, not unlike the one the recently released flagship from Apple, the iPhone 5S. This shows once more that HTC aims to improve the cameras of its devices.

When it comes to software, this year’s HTC One will be the first smartphone from the Taiwanese company to be released with the latest Android version, Android 4.4 KitKat, out of the box. Considering that Android 4.4 KitKat debuted in November last year, it is about time for HTC to release a device with the latest version of Google’s mobile Operating System. The HTC M8 will also feature the latest version of HTC’s user interface, HTC Sense 6.0, on top of Android 4.4 KitKat.

Besides the new dual rear camera sensors and the dual colored LED flash, the new HTC One also features a larger display size and a newer version of Android. Other than that, it seems to be very similar to the old one, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With a sleek design, upgraded System on Chip and improved camera sensor (or sensors considering there are two rear camera sensors now), the new HTC One has all it needs to become a major hit. It may be just a small update, but last year HTC One managed to compete with Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S and we believe that this year’s HTC One also known as the HTC M8 will be able to become a new hit for HTC. After all, small updates can do wonders when the predecessor was already a successful product – just look at the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini.
