iPhone 6 Specs And Features – The Latest Rumors

Last year, on September 20, Apple released both the high end iPhone 5S and the mid range iPhone 5C. This year, in the Fall, Apple will unveil and release the upcoming main entry in its iPhone lne of smartphones, the iPhone 6. There’s not many months left until September, so rumors and leaks are going to start appearing more often until the official announcement. The latest leaks and rumors come from renowned iOS device leaker Sonny Dickson. , Sonny Dickson claims he knows the specs and features of the upcoming iPhone 6 smartphone.
For those of you that don’t know, Sonny Dickson also leaked the specs and feature and even images of the iPhone 5C, iPad Air and the second generation iPad mini, a long time before they were unveiled and released. He is also mentioning that at this time, these are only rumors and each of its tweets regarding iPhone 6′s specs ends with the “#JustSaying” hashtag, probably as a ‘ take it with a grain of salt’ disclaimer.
According to these leaked specs, the iPhone 6 will be slimmer than the current iPhone 5S; the iPhone 6 is rumored to be only 0.22 inches thick (which is about 5.5 mm); the iPhone 5s is 0.30 inches thick for reference (about 7.6 mm). The difference is considerable if true. The iPhone 6 is also rumored to feature an ultra Retina display. As you know a Retina display is a display that offers such a high pixels per inch density that individual pixels are not visible with the naked eye. Well, if we are to believe these leak, the iPhone 6′s display would feature a never before seen pixels per inch density for an iDevice: 389. For comparison, the iPhone 5S’ display features a pixels per inch density of 326. Maybe the larger iPhone model rumors are true; more about that later.
Sonny Dickson also mentioned that the next generation of Apple’s System on Chip, the A8, will feature a CPU clocked at 2.6 GHz. However, take this clock speed with a grain of salt as it might just be a theoretical clock limit that Apple may downclock from for battery life reasons. Previous major revisions were the same way when speculation and early rumors started dropping. Also, while Sonny Dickson did not mention anything about the amount of RAM that the iPhone 6 will feature, we believe that 2 GB of RAM is very likely a given.
So, what does this mean for the upcoming iPhone 6? Well, first of all it will be thinner than the current iPhone 5S, which is already very thin. It will also probably feature a larger display so it will not only be thinner but also wider. Wider body means it can be thinner AND house a higher capacity battery which would be the ideal situation. Also, the next generation System on Chip, the A8, will also feature a 64 bit architecture and it will most likely be accompanied by the next generation motion co-processor, the M8, for fitness tracking. Yet, the rumor about the iPhone 6′s System on Chip featuring a 2.8 GHz processor is hard to believe considering it would represent a huge leap from iPhone 5S’ 1.3 GHz dual core processor; besides, Apple has generally not relied on frequency for performance improvements, so we doubt it will start this year, with the iPhone 6.
We also mentioned that due to the increased pixels per inch density, the iPhone 6 will likely be larger than the iPhone 5S. This was rumored to be the case for a while now and in January this year we reported about the options that Apple has for a size increase. Basically, Apple has 2 options. To summarize, for a 5 inch display, the first option involves keeping the same widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 and the current resolution of its iPhone models (which is 1136 × 640 pixels) and simply use larger pixels. The negative side of this option is that iPhone 6′s pixels per inch density will suffer, decreasing from the current pixels per inch density of 326 to 260.
The second option that Apple has, involves increasing the resolution while keeping the same widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9. For a 5 inch display, in order to maintain the same pixels per inch density of 326, the iPhone 6′s resolution will have to be 1420 × 800 pixels. As you can see, none of these options match the rumored pixels per inch density, which can only mean one thing: if the rumor is correct and the iPhone 6 will be released with a pixels per inch density of 389, it won’t feature a 5 inch display.
We are basically looking at one of three display resolutions assuming Apple will the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio (otherwise, developers are going to have to adapt their apps for a new resolution, which is not out of the realm of possibility, but just less probable). The current iPhone 5S features a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels at 4 inches and a pixels per inch density of 326. If we were to increase the pixels per inch density and keep the same aspect ratio of 16:9, at 389 pixels per inch we would have: 1) a resolution of 1366 x 768 at 4.1 inches; 2) a resolution of 1600 x 900 at 4.8 inches; and 3) a resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 5.8 inches. Out of these three resolutions and sizes, the most probable one is 1600 x 900 with a 4.8 inch display. We doubt that Apple will transform the iPhone 6 into a phablet and make it over 5 inches. We don’t think most users even want a display size over 4.5 or 5 inches.
However, Apple is known for having a thing for odd screen resolutions, so the above mentioned resolutions and display sizes may not actually reflect the smartphone’s specs. It is also worth noting that a higher pixels per inch density could directly affect battery life so it will be interesting to see if Apple will equip the iPhone 6 with a higher capacity battery than the iPhone 5S; we remind you that these rumored specs make the iPhone 6 thinner than the iPhone 5S but it will also feature a Wider body which means that the battery could actually be bigger. Also, we really doubt the almost double clock frequency for the CPU, which seems pointless since the current A7 System on Chip in the iPhone 5S smashes most quad core CPU’s on the market.
As we said, some of these rumors (like the clock frequency of the A8 System on Chip and Apple would make the iPhone 6 even thinner than the iPhone 5S) don’t make much sense at the moment, but Sonny Dickson did leak the specs and feature of the iPhone 5C, iPad Air and the second generation iPad mini, long before they were unveiled and released so we will just have to wait and see. Thankfully, we won’t have too much to wait, less than half a year, until September.
