Apple Passcode Patent Shows Apple Working On Alternative Password Solutions

Passwords and passwords again. You feel like leaving them aside, but it seems that you still need them, even if you don’t want your children to call your boss in the middle of the night or your lover to find your secrets. So, you need them but hate typing them. Apple seems to have figured this out and is trying to find new and better alternatives for the text or number -based older ones. And this is how appeared the patent application powered by the Cupertino company, which seems to distinguish the right user who set the pass code voice, touch-based input, identifying a person or object in a photo. As it might have been expected, Patently Apple was the first report on this issue regarding the patent application, coming with a great review of the purpose and functionality of the app. The report was published in the United States Patent and the Trademark Office just a few days ago. So, let’s take a look on the statements, in order to see the great news the app brings.

Well, their first statement was that Apple’s patent is assigned to learn the users about the ways in which he can authentify on the device and provide him access to a computing device. The example given by them was on the iPhone. Actually, what the process of autenthification involves is summarized in the following lines: the user should select one of more images which may be detailed in one or more objects. What is important is that the user should be accustomed with them. Also, the image should be stored on the computing device and also displaying the name. You should take into account that an object might be the person’s face. Next, all you should know is that the images detected by the computing device are associated with an object found in the image. It doesn’t necessary need to identify, it might only associate the data with the object. Then, the computing device takes for granted the info and accepts information from the user. The user is allowed to access the computing device if the input data corresponds  with the data associated with the object.

The report from the United States Patent exemplified above is just an example of how this modern authentication based on images works. Still, if the user is not sure of the security with only one picture, he can choose multiple objects or photos for better security.

What is sure is that Apple is currently trying to find alternative password solutions for the logging in to the device. Some examples are facial recognition password, which was a subject for the press in September, last year or the fingerprint scanning, an app from last year also, but not old-fashioned. Still, this does not guarantee that the iOS will have no more passwords anymore in the next few years. Still, a good thing is that Apple is trying to improve this issue by finding alternative password methods.
