Passionate attachment to smartphones has literally spread worldwide. According to a recent study undertaken by scientists from Yale University, Connecticut, more than 60% of smartphone owners suffer from nomophobia.

The neologism “nomophobia” is formed with the words “no mobile phobia”. The term means the strong anxiety and apprehension felt by a person who is afraid of being apart from their precious smartphone for a long time. More than two thirds out of a thousand respondents aged from 18 to 29 admitted that they are afraid of being left without their mobile devices. In addition, 41% of respondents said they had at least two phones to stay in touch all the time, as reported by the Italian resource Tecnocino with a reference to the study.

Women are more likely to be afraid of losing their smartphones than men (70% and 61% respectively). At the same time, as shown by the survey results, men are more likely to have two phones (47%) than women (36%). The researchers found out that the younger the people are, the more likely they are to suffer from nomophobia. 77% of young people from the 18-25 age group had the symptoms of this “disease”.

Another high rate, which is 68%, was recorded in the 25-34 age group. The number of people who feel uncomfortable because of being without their mobile phone is increasing every year. A similar survey conducted in 2008 revealed only 53% of people suffering from nomophobia.
