Rumor: 128GB iPhone Model On The Way To Consumers

Who doesn’t want a higher storage capacity in their device? Well I think the answer is universally shared and we would all love that our iPod, iPhone or iPad is able to provide support for a larger storage capacity. And if you are relating this idea to the launch of the already rumored iPhone 5S, the so called successor of the iPhone 5, then we are not quite actually referring to it right now, but to the iOS 6.1 beta 5 that is supposedly coming out with a larger storage capacity and has got people commenting on this possibility. There are these rumors going on everywhere anticipating that a 128GB iDevices is very soon to be seen, and rumors have even gone more further ahead adding that “iOS 6.1 beta 5 has 128G system partition key in BuildManifest”.
We can’t help but think however that if this shall actually be the case and if this shall come out soon enough, as it has indeed been a fact that over the time Apple has become known for its increasing the storage size, this actually being a characteristic of the brand and of any new models coming out. What would this mean though – pretty much that making the plunge from 64GB to 128GB and also maintaining the same size device would translate into a double density flash. What do you think of that?
If we think of this a little more in perspective and in detail as well – then it would mean that in order for the company to be able to keep its current prices and also margins, the price of the components applicable for high density flash would have to pretty much be low or cheap enough to say the least. But it does not all come to this at the end of the day, and what is also an important element is that Apple would have to encompass this as a feature, so they should be in a good place in their product process.
If we look at previous iPhone 5 reviews, we can notice a pattern in what concerns the storage capacity and its constant and gradual increase. Every two years we have witnessed a doubling of Apple devices’ storage capacity, and this is how it went. It all started with the original maximum 8GB for the iPhone. But it was only half a year later that we were witnessing the 16 GB version as well. Let’s go to the iPhone 3G – this one also had a 16GB maximum storage capacity. But then we pass on to the 32GB maximums – and we can find this in the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. And the story does not stop here, and we can witness another increase – which gets up to the 64GB, introduced by the iPhone 4S the previous year. So if we take a look at this pattern we could claim that we should stick to the 64GB for the iPhone 5 and for this year, so I guess we shall live and see if history can apply here as well. But we can’t really tell for sure how it is going to be with the upcoming iPhone 5S, and perhaps this is what makes it all the more exciting to anticipate.
Analysts would like to start to keep up the records and patterns and claim that adding 128GB to your iPhone 5S, iPod touch 5 mark II, iPad 5, and iPad mini 2 should be somewhere on our list, but there is no general agreement when it comes to what shall “mitigate the product pressure for 128GB” – and the rumors revolve around Cloud storage, Apple’s own iCloud or even services such as Dropbox, so we will have to wait for this and then comment on it.
It is now all up to them to come out with it and up to us to decide if we could really make use of more, or if we really need and want more. But it will also inevitably come down to price as well – and we will see how much of a difference the extra storage price can make and if you think it is all worth it in case Cloud didn’t make it all the way for you. But again, these are all speculations at this stage.
