Samsung Galaxy S4 firmware update

S42 360x250 Samsung Galaxy S4 firmware update

Samsung just updated the Galaxy S4′s firmware, fixing bugs (such as a display error that would leave a purple trace on the screen) and removing concerns about limited storage capacity. The firmware is being released in Germany first, for the Galaxy S4 GT-I8505 (it is the variant using the Snapdragon 600 System on a Chip). It is a pretty big firmware update, of 366 MB; however as we mentioned it fixes storage capacity problems, allowing users to run apps from the microSD card.

People were very unhappy regarding the size of the preloaded apps and services and how much space they occupy on the Galaxy S4′s limited storage capacity. The cheaper Galaxy S4 model, the 16 GB one, comes with preloaded apps and service that can take more than 7 GB of storage space, leaving the user with only 9 GB of free space for his apps and content. So people that buy the cheapest model would only get to use just a bit over half the entire storage capacity.

Samsung’s response to this was that the microSD card can add up to 64 more GB; while true, there is still a limit on apps as they can only be installed on the smartphone’s internal memory and not on the microSD card. Not anymore, as this new firmware fixes this inconvenience, now allowing users to install apps on the microSD card. There is also a small amount of internal memory that is freed, about 130 MB.

Another fix introduced with this firmware update has to do with a purple smearing that many users encountered when scrolling on their Smasung Galaxy S4. It would seem that the new firmware fixes this display error and even adds a new mode for the display, increasing legibility. One very interesting tweak  brought by this firmware update is that the camera has now the ability to record HDR (High Dynamic Range) videos and a Smart Pause Toggle. There is also a semi transparent status bar now and new icons in the settings page. Another addition is that you can see more info about the secure boot status on the About Phone page.

As we mentioned the update is currently pushed for the Snapdragon 600 version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 so those of you owning an octa core Galaxy 4 that uses the Exynos 5 Octa System on a Chip will have to wait a bit before getting it. Those of you having a Snapdragon 600 powered Galaxy S4 can update via the Samsung KIES app or via OTA (over the Air) which requires a WiFi connection. In case your country has not received the update don’t worry as the firmware update is expected to be released in all regions very soon.
