The competition of smartphone manufacturers in reducing bezels may soon become pointless. Samsung started testing a phone prototype with a screen that wraps around side panels of its casing, as reported by the journalists of the Korean edition of the ZDNet. They also point out that the gadget features an enhanced version of the proprietary technology called Youm. According to the source, the smartphone prototype is equipped with a three-sided screen enveloping its casing.

According to the source, all the three screen sides of such phone can work independently. For example, the main part of the screen can be turned off, and the user can read SMS or new notifications on the side at the same time. The first version of the Samsung-owned Youm technology, enabling a screen of four layers instead of six (LCD), as in AMOLED, was first presented at the CES 2013 in the beginning of the year, and has already been featured in a curved Galaxy Round smartphone.

It is reported that Samsung engineers are presently assessing the efficiency of replacing physical volume and power buttons with touch keys located on the screen sides. Previously there were rumors that the three-sided screen will be featured in the next generation of Galaxy smartphones. It is also possible that the technology will be used in some brand new gadgets lineup; of course, provided that the tests are successful.

The smartphones innovations have to help Samsung cope with the outlined saturation of the upper segment, where the South Korean manufacturer is Apple’s main competitor. Yet the test does not necessarily mean that Samsung will be able to set up the commercial production of such devices in the foreseeable future.
