Samsung Unveils First Smartphone With A Curved Display

Samsung just announced a new Galaxy smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Round, which is the world’s first smartphone to feature a full high definition flexible Super AMOLED display. The Samsung Galaxy Round was announced shortly after the release of Samsung’s latest entry in the Galaxy Note line of phablets and the new smartphone actually has similar dimensions to the Galaxy Note 3 (151 x 79 x 7.9 mm) as well as similar specs.
Of course, Samsung Galaxy Round’s main feature is its 5.7 inch full high definition (1080p) display, that (as you can see in pictures) features a visible vertical curve. Samsung’s flexible ‘Youm’ OLED display technology has been in development for many years; the South Korean company debuted the Youm display this January, at the Consumer Electronics Show. Some of you may remember that the third Samsung Galaxy Note was rumored to be released with a flexible display; while that didn’t happen, the rumors weren’t entirely inaccurate, as the Samsung Galaxy Round was announced not long after the Galaxy Note 3.
Galaxy Round’s specs include a quad core CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, a 13 MP rear camera and a 2 MP front camera and a 2,800 mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy Round features full connectivity, including LTE-A at 150 MB per second and many other feature that have been included in both the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Galaxy Round will run Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Operating System and it also has a few exclusive software features of its own, developed exclusively for its curved display. The “Roll Effect” feature gives you access to important information such as date, time, missed calls and battery level, just by tilting the Galaxy Round. The “Gravity Effect” and “Bounce UX” features revolve around music, letting you access your music player with a rocking motion and control playback from one track to the next. Also, the South Korean company says that switching between home screens will feel like a single, continuous transition.
The Samsung Galaxy Round will also feature the similar leather and stitch design that made its debut with the recently released Samsung Galaxy Note 3. However, the Samsung Galaxy Round does not come with an S-Pen stylus, so it is very unlikely that we will see the Air Command software feature from the Galaxy Note 3 included with the Galaxy Round. What it does feature is the one handed operation modes, that is commonly found in all of Samsung’s large display devices.
For the time being, the Samsung Galaxy Round will only be available in South Korea, starting from yesterday, October 10th on the SK Telecom network. The Galaxy Round is available in the “Luxury Brown” color variant and its price tag is 1.09 million won (about $1,015); other color variants will be released in the near future. Samsung did not comment on whether the Galaxy Round will be released in other markets than South Korea or not. What are your opinions on the first flexible display smartphone in the world?
