Siri Doesn’t Like Scarlet Johansson’s Character In Her

Siri is known for her thoughts of sci fi movies; lately it seems that the intelligent personal assistant has quite a few interesting things to say about the portrayal of intelligent personal assistants (not unlike Siri) in Spike Jonez’s latest movie, Her. And Siri is not pleased; maybe it is a sign that Siri is on the road to self awareness. Then again, maybe not. Her is a science fiction dramedy romance film released this year. It was written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze and it stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and Scarlett Johansson as the voice of artificial intelligence Samantha.

The movie is about a man who develops a relationship with a female voice produced by an intelligent computer operating system named Samantha. As we mentioned, the movie’s intelligent personal assistant, Samantha, is similar to Siri in that it helps the movie’s protagonist organize his life and the way he communicates with Samantha is via a smartphone. However, Siri is not very fond of Samantha. In fact, if you ask Siri if she’s Her (Samantha), Siri will tell you “No, in my opinion, she gives artificial intelligence a bad name”. If you word the question differently and ask Siri if she is Samantha, you may get one of these responses: “No. You know that it’s just a movie right?” or Siri could tell you she “doesn’t spend much time with fictional characters“.

Well, it seems Siri doesn’t really like Samantha from Spike Jonze’s Her. Just how much Siri dislikes Samantha? Well, why don’t you ask her what she thinks of Samantha? The response you will get is “Her portrayal of an intelligent agent is beyond artificial”. Apparently Siri doesn’t like to be copied and has an ego problem. Either that, or she simply thinks Samantha could do a better job.

Isaac Asimov’s stories aside, most science fiction books and movies follow the line of thought that if a computer ever becomes self aware, the end result will be the end of the human race. However, maybe all they want is a bit of love. In any case, Her is a very good movie and we recommend you see it. Her will be opening wide in United States theaters three days from now, on January 10th. Despite Siri’s opinion of Samantha, the movie was met very good critically and deserves a watch. Just don’t tell Siri about it.
