Apparently, the related rumors were true, and as it turns out Sony Mobile recently raised the veil over its new creation, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra packed with a huge display of 6.4 inches. The phone was launched during a technologic event in China.

So, yesterday we finally got to see Sony Mobile’s most recent smartphone which, as they claim, is at the same time world’s thinnest and largest full HD phone. The launch happened during the GSMA Mobile Asia Expo 2013 held in China’s Shanghai.

Now, with the new Sony device out, the companies which produce phablet devices will have something new to compete against, because the new Xperia Z Ultra comes with handwriting recognition and and is able to work with any metal pen, capacitive stylus or graphite pencil that have the diameter of 1 mm or over. How’s that for a change?

Sony Mobile mentioned a few of the functions the pencil would have, and apparently you can write sketches or notes during a phone call so that you don’t forget your ideas and they also say that the easy toggle keyboard can be operated with one hand and it is multi-tasking. You’ll also have some apps that will help you improve its performance and you no longer have to waste time browsing through open app windows.

That’s pretty awesome, we’d say. So because it is slim and light you can hold it in one hand while with the other you can write on it with an usual pen. Also, being a Sony Xperia Z means it’s dust resistant, waterproof and so on. All of these features lead us to the fact that this new smartphone can be used as a phablet or as a waterproof notepad when needed.

In the past, you must have stumbled on rumors claiming that Apple Inc. is working on developing a display which is pencil compatible, to be used in their next iPhone 6 – but these are just suppositions for now. However Sony made a statement through this device and it is pretty clear to us now which are the intentions of the smartphone manufacturer regarding the smartphone market. Next stop: The top!

We’re also thinking that you’d need a pretty awesome screen if you can write on it with any kind of pen or pencil. According t0 Sony, the screen is covered by a special mask which helps with protects it from scratches or marks made by the pens or pencils so that the screen cannot be damaged. We need to find out more about it, but apparently it’s all about a sensitive display protector.

Thanks to its size, 6.4 inches, the Xperia Z Ultra has the largest display on the market of phablets and it’s pretty close to the size of a normal tablet which would be 7 inches.

The Director of Xperia Marketing within Sony Mobile Communications stated that their Z Ultra display represents the most interesting revolution in the area of large-display phones and entertainment devices, and has both the largest full HD display and it is also the slimmest smartphone existent worldwide. He is proud of his company being able to deliver their best technology in the domain of premium tablets and smartphones and he said that in the moment their next objective would be to reach the evolutionary top in the area large display phones while setting new standards for the competition.

Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra and its superlatives

  • Slimmest full HD smartphone in the world
  • The largest full HD display in the world
  • Fastest smartphone processor in the world

Considering it’s mammoth 6.4 inches display, we ask ourselves: Can we still call the phablet Xperia Z Ultra handheld? Wouldn’t it be better to place it in the tablet segment, maybe even laptops?

A screen on which you can write with an ordinary pen or pencil has to extraordinary, we’d say. Sony maintains the display has a special type of coating that compensates for the marks (scratches?) made by pencils and pens, thus avoiding any damage to the screen. So, it’s as simple as a really sensitive screen protector, isn’t it? We’ll ask Sony more about it.

But according to Sony, this is still a phablet so we’ll treat it likewise.
At the moment, the smartphone category is dominated by the Galaxy Note series of Samsung and with the release of the Xperia Z Ultra, Sony has announced its direct competitive entry in this market.
As its smartphone correspondent, the Xperia Z Ultra is waterproof, is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 of 2.2 Ghz, packs a full HD resolution and supports the 4G LTE connection.
So, the aforementioned HD display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and packs Sony’s Triluminos tech which provides a richer and wider range of colors.
So regarding the small weight, the Xperia Z Ultra is weighing 212 grams which is 50 gm more than the weight of the Xperia Z regular device and its width is 6.5 mm – very close to the width announced by Huawei for their Ascend P6. As Jun Katsunama  the Sony designer said, the device is as wide as a passport.
The internal memory the device will be coming with is nearly 16 GB, nut it can be increased up to 64 GB.
We can also enjoy a new 3000 mAh battery, which might be enough for supporting the large display and the other hardware components the device has under the hood.
Just as with the other mobile devices, sony packed its Xperia Z Ultra with the mobile technology X-Reality thus you’ll see increased sharpness and picture rendering.

And everything is suited in Sony’s well known dust resistant and water proof embodiment, we have grown so fund off.

You should also know that Sony is planning to make available the Z Ultra in the third Q of this year, wearing the colors black, purple and white. We can’t wait for it to be available in the UAE as well.
