The iPad mini 2 To Feature A Retina Display

The iPad mini 2 is rumored to be released this year and most users hope that it will address the current iPad mini’s biggest problem: the lack of a Retina display. After the rumors that Apple might use Samsung manufactured displays for its iPhone line, there are now rumors that the iPad line might also get Samsung manufactured displays, as Apple shakes the supply chain. The successors to the critically and commercially successful iPad mini is set to be released this year, however nobody knows if Apple will upgrade the iPad mini 2′s display to a Retina display or if the display will remain the same. The iPad mini’s display is capable of the same resolution as the second generation iPad and users all over the world hope that Apple will upgrade the display to a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, which is also the iPad 4′s resolution. If the iPad mini 2′s display will indeed be capable of such a resolution and also keep its 7.8 inch screen size, then it will have a much larger pixels per inch density than the iPad 4 which means it will offer an improved image quality.

A report that surfaced online last week suggested that Apple contracted LG Display to manufacture and deliver 2 – 3 million Retina Display panels for the next generation iPad mini and the same report also hinted at an October release for the iPad mini 2. However, in direct contradiction with last week’s report, there was a report released yesterday that suggests that Apple is giving up on its display provider, the same that manufactured the iPad mini’s displays, due to the provider’s inability to deliver on time the iPad mini 2 displays that Apple needs. The report claims that AUO was unable to manufacture a high penetration LCD for the next generation iPad mini. The report is in Korean and the translation does not clarify whether this means a higher display resolution or not.

There are also some recent rumors about Apple contracting Samsung Display (besides LG Display and Sharp) to manufacture the iPad mini 2′s display. A previous report from last month claimed that Apple was in talks with Samsung Display to manufacture a Retina display for the iPad mini 2, of the same size as the current iPad mini (7.9 inches) but with the same display resolution as iPad 4′s display: 2048 × 1536 pixels. If these rumors are true, than it would seem that Apple and Samsung are on good terms again, after a very expensive lawsuit last year. And even though the two companies are rivals (their iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones are directly competing to one another), there are rumors that Samsung will manufacture the next iPhone CPU after the iPhone 6 will be released and of course there is the aforementioned rumor that Samsung Display will manufacture the iPad mini 2′s display.

For now there is no official news from Apple and you shouldn’t expect any until the device will be released. The rumors that we have are conflicting regarding the subject of a Retina display for the second generation iPad mini. While some of these rumors claim that we won’t see a Retina display iPad mini until next year, other say that a Retina display iPad mini will be released in the third quarter of this year.
