Last week Samsung introduced a brand new metal-cased premium smartphone named Galaxy Alpha. It is one of the most wanted devices as designers in Seoul wouldn’t offer anything but for plastic gadgets, and they`ve been criticized about that fact as often as not. The device is positioned as the main rival of the upcoming iPhone. Since Samsung couldn’t beat Apple’s smartphones in size and specs, they decided to focus on the design.

Metal case is the Samsung’s main improvement. Up until now, aluminum was used only for Galaxy Gear and Galaxy Neo smartwatches. As far as smartphones are concerned, there was only a Symdian-based slider named Samsung i8510 Innov8 released back in 2008. The entire lineup went with plastic cases, including the protected Active smartphones. Plastic cases were the main reason why Samsung had been criticized heavily.

Therefore, everyone expected the new, semi-mythical metal smartphone to become the premium one. In some way, this appeared to be true. Samsung says that the device brings a new design standard to the entire Galaxy lineup; it will be a brand new flagship phone of the South Korean company.

The device features an 8-core Exynos 5 processor, 2GB RAM, and a 4.7 inch 1280x720px screen. In fact, it is a little bit lower compared to other flagship Android devices that have at least Full HD resolutions. According to the specifications, the battery is a weak spot of the device. The battery capacity is only 1860mAh. Another vice of the phone is lack of the SD card slot.

It is expected that the smartphone will hit the market on September 12. Galaxy Alpha will compete with the iPhone 6 that will be unveiled on September 9. A remarkable fact is that the size of the devices will be quite similar: according to the information available, the new Apple’s flagship comes with a 4.7 inch screen as well. So, they will compete even in the screen size category as well.
