An American startup named Energous has introduced an innovative WattUp technology, which allows to charge smartphones, tablets and other portable consumer electronics within the room. According to the company founder, Stephen Rizzona, radio waves are used as a wireless power transmitter.

To use WattUp one will need a case with an integrated wireless charge receiver and a control device that transmits power at a distance of up to 15 feet. The later charges the device within its range not all the time, but at a the charge level pre-defined. The main charger uses Bluetooth interface, to determine the condition of the battery in the appropriately equipped gadgets; in case of the low charge of the smartphone or tablet it automatically initiates the recharging process.

The energy is transferred with radio waves, which the receiver converts to DC. Depending on the distance and direction to the mobile devices the array of small antennas of the charge changes the configuration at times. It is possible to increase the overall system efficiency up to 20%.

Due to its obvious usability the WattUp technology can become a universal solution. The Energous plan on licensing the technology with other manufacturers, so in the future we expect to see a wide variety of gadgets supporting this method of charging. As a result, notes Rizzona, users will finally be able to get rid of the pile of chargers and cables.

The WattUp wireless chargers will go on sale by the end of 2015.
