The next main entry in Apple’s market leading smartphone line of devices, the iPhone 6, is going to be unveiled and released to the general public this year, in the Fall. Since there are not many months left until September, rumors and leaks have already started to appear online and many more will appear until the official unveiling of the sixth generation iPhone. Not even two weeks ago, we told you that renowned iOS device leaker Sonny Dickson tweeted the rumored specs and features of the upcoming iPhone 6 smartphone.

According to the specs leaked by Sonny Dickson, the iPhone 6 will be only 0.22 inches thick (which is about 5.5 mm), so slimmer than the iPhone 5s which is 0.30 inches thick for reference (about 7.6 mm). He also mentioned that the upcoming sixth generation iPhone will feature an ultra Retina display, which means the iPhone 6 would feature an incredibly high pixels per inch density for an iDevice: 389. For comparison, the iPhone 5S’ features a pixels per inch density of 326. The Sonny Dickson leaked specs also included the next generation System on Chip from Apple, the A8, and a CPU clocked at 2.6 GHz. Also, while Sonny Dickson did not mention anything about the amount of RAM that the iPhone 6 will feature, we believe that 2 GB of RAM is very likely a given.

Now, we have the first leaked images of the upcoming iPhone 6 and they come from a post on Weibo (a Chinese website). The leaked images are consistent with the leaked rumors, as they show a considerably thinner smartphone, with the camera lens protruding from the iPhone 6, which would be new for the iPhone line but not for the iPod touch line. The device shown in the leaked images also seems to have rounded edges. The leaked images are said to be from Foxconn (the Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturing company that is known for making the iPhone devices) and show what seems to be a prototype device, not a final product.

Of course, Apple is already working on the upcoming iPhone 6 and maybe they are prototyping it, but even so, we cannot say if the pictures are real and display an actual iPhone 6 prototype or not. Not to mention that tomorrow is April 1st and this may be just a prank. However, as we already mentioned, the leaked images are actually consistent with previous rumors and also with recently laked drawings that also showed a protruding camera lens. The iPhone 6 is also rumored to feature a larger display than the iPhone 5S, and due to (rumored) increased pixels per inch density, it seems very possible that the sixth generation iPhone will be released with a larger display.

Speaking of a larger display, there were also plenty of rumors that hinted the iPhone 6 would feature a sapphire display. While at the moment, sapphire is still very expensive to be produced in large quantities, Apple does have the resources to pull this off. At the moment, GT Advanced Technologies makes sapphire glass for iPhone camera lenses and also for the fingerprint reading devices that have been used in the iPhone 5S. Since the leaked images from Foxconn only show the back of the rumored iPhone 6, it is hard to verify the rumors regarding a larger display and a sapphire glass display. In any case, we can definitely see Apple releasing the iPhone 6 with a larger display, as most of its competitors offer larger displays than the iPhone 5S. Our bet is on a display size somewhere between 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches.

There were also rumors about a curved display, though from these leaked images, it doesn’t seem to be the case. We reiterate however that there is no evidence that these pictures are real. Especially since it is a bit early for leaked images. Nevertheless, these images are consistent with previous rumors and the idea of an iPhone 6 that is an evolution of the iPhone 5S, with an elegant design inspired by the second generation iPad mini. In any case, more details will surely surface in the coming months and it will be easier to make educated guesses and see what specs and features have a high chance of becoming a reality. Until then, we have these leaked images, though considering tomorrow is April 1st, we are a bit skeptical about their validity.
