We just informed you about the leaked image showing the alleged home screen menu of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and we already have more news about Samsung’s upcoming flagship. Usually, when every day there is new news about a product, it means it is nearing its release date or at least its unveiling. And that’s what everybody things is going to happen next, as Samsung just sent invitations for an event that the South Korean company is going to host in Barcelona, Spain this month on February 24th. On Monday February 24th, Samsung is going to announce its “new flagship product” at the beginnging of the  Mobile World Congress. It’s really not hard to guess which device Samsung will unveil, especially since the hints on the invitations read “Unpacked 5“. Samsung Galaxy S5 is just around the corner.

As if the “Unpacked 5” hint on the invitations was not proof enough, there is also the fact that at the same event last year the South Korean company unveiled the current flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4, only instead of Barcelona the Samsung Galaxy S4 was unveiled in New York City, last March. As you would expect, Samsung officials did not comment what the 5 in “Unpacked 5” stands for, but as we mentioned above, it’s not hard to guess… unless Samsung does surprises us all and unveils a device other than the Samsung Galaxy S5. The company held another Unpacked event in the Fall of 2013 where it unveiled both the third generation Galaxy Note phablet and the first generation Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

In January 2014 Lee Young Hee, Samsung mobile chief, confirmed that its company intends to release the fifth Galaxy S smartphone before April 2014 and an unveiling this month is consistent with what Lee Young Hee said last month. He said that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be a big step forward when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S4, mentioning that the leap from the Samsung Galaxy S3 to the Samsung Galaxy S4 wasn’t as big as it will be this time. “When we moved to S4 from S3, it’s partly true that consumers couldn’t really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn’t as big [...] For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover” said Lee Young Hee. Samsung mobile’s executive also claimed that the second generation Galaxy Gear smartwatch will also be unveiled this February at the Unpacked 5 event, mentioning improvements over the disappointing first generation of smartwatch.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Specs And Features

There have been many rumors about the fifth Galaxy S’ specs and features; the ones we heard the most are those regarding a 64 bit System on Chip. Though these rumors started to appear after a Samsung announcement last year. In an interview last year by Korea Times, asked if its upcoming smartphones will be powered by 64 bit processors, like the iPhone 5S, Shin Jong-Kyun (Samsung’s CEO of Mobile) said: “Not in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality”. So analysts began speculating that the Samsung Galaxy S5 may be the first of the South Korean’s smartphones to feature a 64 bit System on Chip, a feature that debuted in last year’s iPhone 5S from Apple. However, the iPhone 5S’ other innovative feature, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, will not be included in the Samsung Galaxy S5.  When asked if it is possible for the Samsung Galaxy S5 to include a fingerprint sensor, an official Samsung spokesperson stated: “We are not yet developing the technology [...]”.

While Samsung officials denied that the very soon to be released Samsung Galaxy S5 would feature a fingerprint sensor similar to iPhone 5S’ Touch ID, there have been rumors about the fifth Galaxy S smartphone featuring another new innovative kind of security feature. That feature is represented by an iris scanner. Just like a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner is a biometric identification feature that makes use mathematical pattern recognition algorithms, only instead of analyzing your fingerprint, it analyzes an image of your eyes’ irises. While the feature has not been confirmed in any form by Samsung, it has been mentioned and sources claim the South Korean company is considering including an iris scanner in the Samsung Galaxy S5.

It was also rumored that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be released with 3 GB of RAM, just like last year’s Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Today’s smartphones need a lot of resources and increased RAM is always welcomed. In a statement from last year, Samsung confirmed it began mass production of the first low power 3 GB DDR3 RAM for mobile devices. Considering the Galaxy S5 is the South Korean company’s upcoming flagship, it is safe to assume it will make use of the company’s latest components so we expect the Samsung Galaxy S5 to be released with 3 GB of RAM. A Samsung spokesperson said: “Samsung’s new ultra slim memory solutions will enable thinner smartphone designs and allow for additional battery space, while offering a data transfer speed of up to 2,133 megabits per second (Mbps) per pin“.

The Samsung Galaxy S5?s camera will also be upgraded if we are to believe the rumors. It seems that the next generation Galaxy S will be released with a 16 MP camera that will offer higher quality than every other competitor, except Nokia Lumia 1020?s 41 MP camera sensor. Reports also claim that besides the upgraded camera sensor, Samsung Galaxy S5?s camera will also feature optical image stabilization, which will dramatically improve picture quality even at max zoom settings. The improved camera sensor is rumored to be currently in research and development phase, in Korea to replace the current 13 MP sensor found in the Samsung Galaxy S4. There were also rumors about the new 16 MP camera sensor being included in the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 but it turned out the rumors were just that, rumors, as Samsung’s latest phablet was released with the same 13 MP rear camera as the Samsung Galaxy S4.
